The independent complaints investigator, the Financial Ombudsman Service, has revealed that in every case where a customer has complained about a rate increase, the card company has failed to prove the reasons for it.
As a result, borrowers have had their rate put back down.
A spokesman for the Ombudsman says: ‘We expect to see evidence that the card companies have actually assessed the borrower’s risk.
‘Whenever we ask to see this information, we find that the card company moves to a settlement quite quickly.’
It is not enough for banks simply to say the risk of lending you money has increased.
They must prove you have become more of a risk – so ask to see this information or a full explanation of the price changes.

Virgin Money has put in an application to become a fully fledged bank according to a recent report. The company, headed by Sir Richard Branson, already offers a number of financial products, but now wants to become a full service bank and has put in an application to do so.
At present Virgin Money offers credit cards, investments, and savings, but has made an application to become a full bank to the Financial Services Authority.
Whilst it could take six months or more to approve the application officials have said that if it is successful the launch of Virgin Money into the banking sector could improve competition, giving consumers more choice when it comes to financial products such as mortgages, which is an area where choice has been limited since the onset of the global credit crunch which saw banks become increasingly wary over who they would lend to.

In a week where investors clearly didn’t believe everything they read, views of the recovery diverged, despite important pieces of good economic news.
On Thursday, the Commerce Department reported a 3.5% increase in gross domestic product, the first sign of economic growth since mid-2008. Then Friday’s 250-point selloff left investors worse off than they’d been at Wednesday’s close.
Many economists and market strategists still think there’s a reasonable template for a modest recovery that neither keeps the economy mired in gloom, nor returns to the giddy dynamics of another bubble. T

Everyone knew what they were supposed to do because it was scripted ahead of time. No one panicked because we always assumed it was a drill, even when it wasn’t. (which puzzles me why all of my employers pre-announced rare fire drills)
When was the last time you had a financial fire? Maybe the car broke down or you broke a window in your house. Maybe you were one of the many millions who lost your job last year. I
